I have done a few decals ,and maybe can lend a hand in this area

Depending on the quality of the end product
will largely depend on the graphic program the scanner and the printer settings

to get things in scale you need a scanner to copy the casting to your computer the scan needs to be 100 percent actual size
at 300- 600 DPI
Once the cast has been copied
it will need to be transferred to the graphic program

the better the graphic program the better the end product
I use corel paint
it has settings to change page dpi from 1 dpi to 5000 dpi [dots per inch]
photoshop is also a really good program
both photoshop and corel have all the tools to make great graphics
they also have a long learning process to get a handle on all the different tools so plan on investing some serious time to learn the program and make the one you buy
is the one you want
there not cheap

what you want to do with the scanner and the drawing program is keep both dpi s the same
if you scan the cast at 300 dpi you want to set the page in the drawing program the same 300 dpi this keeps every thing in scale

now its just a matter of adding the art into the drawing program and creating your next custom image

The best way to make decals is trial and error unless you use a program that measures your design in real world measurements such as inches. Another way is there are various scale casting patterns out there. A design that fits on one of these patterns should fit on the real casting.
